Memory can be a challenging asset at times as we age. We find ourselves in search of lost items. In the house, garage, a website, even the spelling of a certain word can trip us up. But memory can still recall if we relax and let our brain find the lost item. I read somewhere that each time we learn something new, our brain makes a road map to it. Even sounds, night house sounds can fool you. Part of acclimating yourself to a new place to live is to learn to identify each place’s night sounds. The sound of the furnace getting ready to turn on, the sound of the water softener running. The sound of a train across the river in Iowa. Always good to hear the whistle, especially during a tornado warning. One sound I’ll never get used to is hearing a car door close shut. Always know what that is and I immediately want to know where it came from.
This morning as I sprayed and swiped my patio doors to clean them I recalled suddenly what a mess they used to be when my Siberian huskies rubbed their smelly, wet, shaggy coats across the bottom half of the doors. I had to clean the doors often then, but I didn’t mind because they were darling dogs. As I cleaned the doors, I suddenly heard a familar sound and wondered aloud to myself, “Why is my garage door going up?” Then I remembered I had just started the washing machine and it had changed into spin mode. I told myself, “Relax.”
Whenever my LB (Little Brother) and I have lost things through the years, we always call each other and accuse the other one of doing something with whatever we were searching for. Within 30 minutes, we find what we were looking for and have to call them back and say, “I’m sorry.” Works most of the time. The older I get the more time I spend looking for things. I spent the morning cleaning windows, using a canned foam spray cleaner that is so good. It stays where you spray it until you can get the rag to it, and cleans in a pass or two. I just have one problem now that I finished three living room windows, two bedroom windows and a couple of bathroom mirrors.
Did you see what I did with the top to the glass cleaner can?
