Enjoy the Prelude!

by Joanne Wiklund

What a week this will be! I remember Christmases past. This time of year we tend to look back. This Christmas will be different from the rest, unique in its own way. We face the prelude to the Big Event, Christmas itself. Back when I got frazzled with small children, I called my mom. She always said, “ Honey, it’ll be all right,” and then reminded me: “Joanne, Christmas is coming whether you’re ready or not, so why not just settle down and enjoy the whole thing?” I can also hear our dad saying, “You guys just need to slow down.”

I think they were both right. Christmas, I believe, sneaks up on you. I don’t mean in music, gifts, baking, shopping, all  things we think we should and have to do. No. Somewhere in this last week before Christmas or on Christmas Eve itself, I find myself reminiscing again. Not about gifts I’ve gotten in the past, but of course about people who aren’t here with us this year. Most of all, I appreciate them so much. Who they were as a person, what a contribution they made to the lives of people around them. I include our Lord, born to die so we can live. What an awesome gift.

Appreciation for God, the world He made. It’s not always easy to keep going when Christmases past catch up with you all at once. Just stand still, and think about how blessed we all really are. We are never really alone. Guard your mind from the evildoers. May a silent, quiet part of Christmas catch up with you somewhere along the way and warm your heart.

Psalms 37:1 “Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.
2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. 3: Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed…”

Luke 2:10-11 “And the angel said unto them, Fear not for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people, 11 “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”
