Little Victories

by Joanne Wiklund

“Little Victories” is a song by Bob Dylan. He points out life’s moments that are unexpected and so worthwhile. The finalities of life are with us every day. Seems like we are always saying goodbye to someone on a regular basis these days. I remember saying goodbye to my Grandma in a hospital room in Iowa City. My sis and I were there together, and Grandma was hanging on by a thread. We left there believing she would be gone before morning. The three hour trip home in the dark was sad and long.

About three months later I was pushing Grandma in her wheelchair around Younkers in the mall in Moline. As we met a woman in an aisle she smiled as we passed each  other. “Wait,” the woman called from behind us. I turned Grandma around and the woman came running back. Ignoring me she bent low to Grandma and asked, “Eva, is that you?”

“I guess so,” Grandma answered. They had at least 15 minutes of reminiscing. The woman was a hat buyer for Younkers Corporate and Grandma worked after retirement in the hat sales department of Younkers in Des Moines. They met on a regular basis so Grandma could order hats she thought her regular customers would like. Grandma had been retired from Younkers for years at that time. She only came to this area once or twice a year because of health concerns. The hat buyer was facing retirement herself and was on her last trip to the Quad Cities before she retired. She hugged Grandma before we parted. I couldn’t help thinking on the way home of all the things that had to happen to bring them both together at this point in their lives.

What are the odds of those two coming together after all those years? No odds necessary with God. He does Little Victories repeatedly in our lives. If we just look for them and remember to give Him credit, it makes life very exciting.
