Time is of the Essence

by Joanne Wiklund

time is of the essence clause is a legal term pertaining to contracts. It means that if a party to a contract does not meet a deadline that has been set forth and agreed upon in a contract, then they may forfeit their rights under the contract.

We make contracts, verbal ones almost every day. We agree to other’s requests without total understanding. We hope we can work details out later. On a person to person basis, this may lead to a promise broken.

What is a promise, but a contract between two or more parties to complete an agreement they made together? Unless you are a parent, and then we learn that a “Maybe” becomes a promise according to the youngest party to the contract. Promises are meant to be kept. Promises are important. Time and circumstances often determine whether a promise may be kept or broken.

But God’s promises are kept. Period. He has not disappointed me. There have been times I failed to understand the situation and it didn’t turn out the way I thought it should. Should. It may carry so much blame as I should have… ignorance is no excuse. It could be a reason. We just don’t know everything. If we listen for God’s leading to love everyone we can, and support those we have trouble loving, life would be so different. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. May that be my motto in coming days.

Hebrews 6:12 “That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”
