How Does it Happen to be June?

by Joanne Wiklund

How did we get here today? Where did May go? I’ve decided it blew out the windows with the violent weather all across the country. According to the report I got this morning, we may be in for another round this afternoon and this evening. Some people like thunderstorms and I do understand. I used to live next to 30 acres of corn. The corn went away when the house was built next door, and the field turned into a lush lawn.

I remember standing at my deck door watching clouds roll by just above the trees in the timber down the hill behind us. When it was over, in late July the cornstalks would stand heavy with raindrops. In the heat of summer, fireflies would rise up out of the corn like fireworks. With the rain settled all the neighborhood kids would be out chasing the lightning bugs around their yard, getting wet themselves. Whether you call them by either name, lightning bugs or fireflies, it was a good time had by all.

Fire Flies is listed in Wikipedia as an American Rock Band from New York City established in 2002. Isn’t it amazing how little we really know? When I study the Bible, even when I study stories I think I know well, each time I go there, I learn a little more and sometimes it changes my perception so much. Prayer is like that also. All those little lights glowing up out of the corn may be what we seem like to God, a light in the world, reaching up to Him for love and guidance. May we keep studying and reaching out to Him. We don’t have to reach up to Him, only out, because He’s right here in the middle of this stuff with us.

Jude 24-25: Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
