Mom is a Good Word

by Joanne Wiklund

I love reading Bible stories about how Jesus loved and cared for women. OnTBN recently, a woman who co-pastors a large church with her husband, was telling what her life was like as a mom. She loves being a mom. She finished describing her family and I was in awe of her. She and her husband have eleven children which includes a set of twins. The oldest now is in high school, with the rest going down through the grades.

As she detailed her schedule for their day, I thought I’d never have survived that.  I’ve had that many kids here at the house at various ages. But not 24/7.  On one trip home from junior high basketball practice with six boys in the back of the wagon, I, as the driver they immediately forgot about, listened while they spoke about their day.

At one point, in a heated discussion one boy said to another: Oh, you WOMAN!  I slid the car to a sudden stop alongside the road. I turned to face the rear, while my son, in the front seat said, Oh, Mom, NO, and slid down toward the dash and the floor. My outburst wås: I don’t know who said that. I want you to know that being a woman is a privilege. I love being a woman. It is a wonderful person to be. The word is not a swear word. No one will ever use that word in that way in this car again. Understood? Just so you remember, your mother is a woman, If you have a sister, she will be a woman soon, and you should respect them for just that. Then I pulled back onto the road and looked at my boy who was upright again. I smiled at him and said, Sometimes, a Mom’s gotta do what a Mom’s gotta do.ˆ

Psalms 119:158-160: “I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; because they kept not thy word. Consider how I love thy precepts quickens me, O Lord, according to my loving kindness. Thy word is true from the beginning:and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth forever.”
