After graduating from high school I supported myself for three years as a carpenter before deciding to go into full-time ministry. I often tell people I quit doing the Lord’s work (carpentry) to become a preacher. Eventually I became a bus driver. Driving a bus is awesome. Everyday you head down the road, pick up a variety of people from a variety of backgrounds, and help them to get where they need to be. You build relationships with the passengers, learn their story, and more than likely meet several members of their family. If you drive the bus long enough you will watch as they age out of the bus, get their own license, and are able to get themselves to where they want to go on their own.
This pretty much sums up ministry. All of us are called to make our way through life looking for opportunities to pull alongside people. Pick them up build a relationship create a friendship and help them to get where they need to be. The destination is always near Jesus. If you are able to stay in that relation long enough, you might have the privilege of watching someone grow in Christ to the point that they are able to stand on their own. They become a new kind of ministry driver that heads out looking for others to pick up helping them get close to Christ.
