Welcome Spring!

by Joanne Wiklund

With April here on Friday, when some people will be playing tricks on friends for April Fool’s Day, I will be trying to catch up with my decluttering routine. This stuff has to go! That’s my goal for now. All I have to do is decide which is “stuff” and which is “keep.” In the meantime, I’m trying to get on a writing schedule to finish something. That is another goal I work toward. There’s such a difference between a goal and a resolution. A goal you work toward, a resolution you break. That’s my own definition, of course.

Because even though we have to get through the storms of April and even this last week of March, with those storms comes needed rain to bring us out of a drought I didn’t really pay any attention to. To say I’ve been distracted is a little soft. But I’m thinking flowers. Peonies in May, Lilacs before that. If you go to a timber you may find Sweet Williams, Lilies of the Valley, Dutchman’s Britches, those pretty pink heart like shapes on the tender foliage.

The woods behind us has lost those things to construction and horses, but there are also deer. They’ve munched on my dwarf evergreens leaving big holes in the sides of them. Mice and voles as well have made strange patterns in my yard. I usually see at least one doe and a fawn come through a few times before May ends. When we were the only house here on the corner of the forty, I used to see foxes and fox cubs playing in the field across the street. Raccoons visited too, but we had a fenced backyard then and a dog to keep critters, including snakes at bay. I’m considering a dog, but without a fence it’s hard. I keep saying no, but then I see all those cute dogs on Facebook and I weaken!

Been baking again. Discovered I was out of powdered sugar for frosting the other night after the cookies were cooled. I went online for a frosting recipe that doesn’t use powdered sugar, but instead I found a way to make my own recipe for it. So I dumped regular sugar in my blender and powdered it like they said. It was a little grainy but it was powdered. Only problem is I didn’t read the article all the way through before I began. You need cornstarch to add to the sugar to make it smooth, not clumpy, and white like frosting. Guess what else I didn’t have. Oh, well. I’ve played “Trash the kitchen” before and I survived. Laura came to my rescue with her stash of powdered sugar and the kids got frosted cookies after all. What is a pineapple cookie without a psst of frosting!

Like I said, ask for help. Someone will answer!

1 John 3:18 “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and truth.”

1 John 4:7-8 “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God, and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.”

11 John 5 “And now I beseech thee, lady, for not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning that we love one another.”
