Where is God in Independence Day?

by Joanne Wiklund

My reading habits changed drastically since I became sequestered here before, during and after the Pandemic. Instead of visiting the library looking for things to read, I retreated to my office library for something to reread. I would tell anyone who asked that I didn’t like history much when I was in high school. I didn’t really understand why I had to know why Hannibal took the elephants into the Alps. When I read how that story ended, I knew I didn’t want to read ancient history.

But I looked again at my book stash as we headed now into the Fourth of July holiday, and found I spent good money on history books after all. One that I have here is called Admiral of the Ocean, a biography of Christopher Columbus. It has quotes from Christopher Columbus, who started out to claim the world for Christ and wound up asking the Queen to make him Admiral of the Ocean. It’s really a good read!

The other one I have to reread is a book by David Manuel and Peter Marshall titled From Sea To Shining Sea. It’s a sequel to The Light and the Glory by the same duo. It details the exploration and foundation of The Brave New World in America. They quote from Columbus’s original plan which has not been published in this country. Their plan for that book was to answer the question: Did God Have a Plan For America? A question which still needs answering today and this book details where and how they found the answer to that question. From Sea To Shining Sea, the second book, details events in our country’s history beginning about ten years after its founding. According to the authors of the book, at that time the new democracy seemed doomed.

As we celebrate our Independence, let us remember all those patriots who have gone before us and given their all in defense of our freedom. And may we help and appreciate all those who serve us today.

Proverbs 29:18 “… without a vision, the people perish.”

Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory for Christ Jesus.”
