Legacy Gifts

by Joanne Wiklund

I think while we think we would prefer to make big splashes of Christmas gifts, so many times it’s the little unexpected things that make the most impression on the receiver. I remember Mom being sad because she couldn’t afford anymore after Dad was gone to buy things like she used to for her family at Christmas. I suggested we raid her attic.

Our Grandma and her sisters had beautiful dishes and glassware which had been left to Mom and were at the time stored in her attic. We chose gifts from the old ragged cardboard boxes, washed them and wrapped them carefully. All who received them were pleased. We continued that the next few years till the biggest part of the pile was gone. It was fun for all. Receiving a gift that is part of a family legacy can be good for both the giver and the receiver. But what do we do with these gifts?

What about the gift we received from our Creator, His only Son? What have we done with Him? Anyone can be a receiver, but we have to think first about what we can do for Him, not what can He do for us.

Psalms 3:5 “I laid me down and slept; for the Lord sustained me.”

Psalms 6:9 “The Lord hath heard my supplication, the Lord will receive my prayer.”

Psalms 16:11 “Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures forevermore.”
