Pop-Up Storms Blindside Us

by Joanne Wiklund

This weather is something everyone everywhere is enduring. Talking about it over and over. Getting caught in a sudden drenching on the way to the car with a cart full of groceries can be unnerving.

Rain, hail, wind, tornadoes…the Midwest has it all. The old saying is that if you don’t like the weather here, wait a minute and it will change. Seasons come and go. We call life’s stormy events “seasons” instead of “stages”. We go through stages and be glad when we think we’re finished. But seasons describe life events better, I think, because all of a sudden seasons can pop up again. Never know what will trigger old grief, disappointment, even a black cloud of desperation or depression.

As Christians, however, we try our best to hang on in darkness. Meteorologists who forecast tornadoes coming your way tell you to immediately go to your safe place. I haven’t done much immediately for years!

But I know where my safe place is. When it’s darkness, Jesus is truly the light. He lets us feel His presence, lifts our spirits, and never leaves us. Lonely, we may feel that way sometimes. But in His word are so many reminders of His love for us. Feeling His presence is also possible for those who believe. Stay close to Him when things that are dark or wet head your way. He’ll be there with you.

1 Peter 1:3-4, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to His abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in faith, even the heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
