Sleep.

by Joanne Wiklund

We all need it, don’t we? Strange how lack of it can turn your mind into mush and your muscles into passive unproductive passengers in your day. For many people these days, their number one complaint is fatigue.

Watching babies sleep is so much fun, especially for a new mom. With the eyelashes spread out and the little chest barely moving, I think all moms have drawn in close to watch and make sure they were breathing okay. Unless of course you have a colicky baby and you wonder if sleep will ever come, for your child or you.

Sleep does such good things for us if it’s uninterrupted. I remember telling a nephew who was spending his first night in his first apartment that he would soon grow accustomed to night noises. He asked me what that was. I told him the furnace would probably grumble a little before it kicked on, the water softener will run, the dehumidifier might make noise. I told him he’d find out what his night noises were soon and then he’d sleep better.

I did tell him though that there is one noise I can always hear and it will always wake me immediately. A car door being closed, slammed or not. After years of living on a lone hill out in the country, that still continues to get my attention. An open car door can bring you someone who comes quietly without good intent.

But a refreshing quiet night in a freshly made bed can help you start the next day with so much vigor. Mom always said an hour of sleep before midnight is worth two hours of sleep after. For me, that works well.

Psalm 127:2 “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for he giveth his beloved sleep.”

Psalm 121:3 “He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.”

1 Thessalonians 4:14 “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring.”
