Weekend Renovation

by Joanne Wiklund

All Monday mornings are not alike. Some are worse than others. If we’re headed for work, or staying home to work, or recuperating from being a weekend warrior, a Monday morning can be dangerous to our attitude. It’s so easy to drag yourself out of bed telling yourself that you are so stupid for trying to do all that in one weekend. The older I get, the more I realize that we used to spend our weekend getting ready for our week. We’d relax on Saturday morning, have late breakfast, decide what to do with the rest of the day. Sunday was meant for church and a dinner out somewhere fun. As empty nesters we did even more of that. But with kids of all ages around, our focus was on the week ahead.

Somewhere we switched. We began to focus on taking the week to get ready for the weekend. We tried to coordinate everyone’s schedules and make sure transportation matched those schedules. We also tried to make sure at least one parent attended everyone’s events. Some weekends took major planning, often a week night or two with shortened sleep hours to make sure we were ready for the weekend. One of those sessions was all about sports equipment. Do we have what they need?

Now, however with the stay at home situation not much is scheduled.  We sneak in some planning since there’s really no place we want to go. We work more on “What Shall We Do Today?” Being together is so important. These days of communing with our families, young or old, bond us like no other. We are learning the foibles of our families. (Foibles: from 17th Century French, meaning weaknesses) It’s what we need to learn so we can help, support and love our family, not hinder them. To love, hug, teach and tickle them. To be together.

Philippians 4:8 Finally Brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, Do, and the God of Peace will be with you.
